LAUSD schools close Tuesday due to strike.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said Monday that all LAUSD schools will be closed Tuesday

due to a possible walkout by tens of thousands of workers and instructors.

If no compromise is reached, the strike will start at 4:30 a.m. PT Tuesday and extend until Thursday.

At a Monday evening press conference, Carvalho remarked, "We do not believe tomorrow's event is avoidable."

"That said, I will wait for a willing partner to call for a meaningful talk for as long as it takes."

This week, negotiations between LAUSD, the nation's largest school district,

and Service Employees International Union Local 99, which represents LAUSD support staff like custodians,

cafeteria workers, and bus drivers, failed. On Monday, the union accused the district of leaking a Monday mediation meeting to the press.
